public. I am a direct descendant of Michael, "Squire" Groody, and the
information in this book about the conditions in the Pennsylvania mines
is extremely useful for a report in my, "Irish in the US," class at
Notre Dame. Thanks again, and I look forward to finishing the book,"<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.seventyyearsinthecoalmines.org/fraterville08sgj.html">http://www.seventyyearsinthecoalmines.org/fraterville08sgj.html</a><br />
<br />
Linda informed me of the other children of Nicholas MASSENGILL and Alice AMOS. I have revised my information about him as seen in the link above. Thank you, Linda. In revisiting his census entries, I noticed that Alice (Amos) MASSENGILL was enumerated as Nancy A. in the 1900 census for Anderson County, TN. So, my presumption is that her full name was Nancy Alice AMOS. I was unable to find her marriage to Nicholas MASSENGILL in Ancestry.com's Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002. I could not find an Alice AMOS in Tennessee in the 1880 census. There was a Nannie (common nickname for Nancy in the 19th century) AMOS, age 9, in the household of Presley and Mary AMOS. They are probably the Presley AMOS and Polly AMOS who were married 9 November 1842 in Roane County, TN. This was probably in the part of Roane County that became part of the newly formed Loudon County in 1870.Seventy Years in the Coal Mines Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944387198918195764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8131081886601290635.post-48397644818513976452012-09-16T14:24:00.000-07:002012-12-23T10:31:14.896-08:00FRATERVILLE MINERS, WALTER A. & WILLIAM H. ROBERTSMEA CULPA. LaVelda Faull, great grand niece of miner, William H. ROBERTS (#111), wrote me recently to correct misinformation about him on my website. First, Walter A. ROBERTS (#110) was NOT a brother of William H. ROBERTS. Second, I had mistaken her great grand uncle for another William H. ROBERTS, born about the same time in Anderson County, TN. LaVelda, a great granddaughter of Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Roberts) FAULL, shared with me an article from "The Bee" of Earlington, Hopkins County, KY, dated 29 May 1902, in which was a report that "Mr. and Mrs. George FAULS went Wednesday to Coal Creek, Tenn., where her brother perished during the recent catastrophe at that place."
Additionally, in revisiting the information for miner, Walter A. ROBERTS (#110), I reviewed census information which showed that he was probably NOT a son of Anneliza Elizabeth ROBERTS as previously shown on my website. He was probably a son of Eliza ROBERTS, age 31, who was in the household of Anneliza ROBERTS, age 28, in the 1870 census for District 5, Anderson County, TN. Also in the household were 2 probable children of Eliza: Walter A., age 8, and George S., age 5.
I am most grateful for the correct information and documentation provided to me by LaVelda.Seventy Years in the Coal Mines Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944387198918195764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8131081886601290635.post-75141232061505953252012-08-31T09:49:00.000-07:002012-08-31T09:49:25.331-07:00CROSS MOUNTAIN MINERS, WILLIAM T. & MILTON HENDERSONThe information for Cross Mountain miners, William T. Earnest WALLACE and William G. WALLACEI have made minor changes to the information about Fraterville miners: W. Ernest WALLACE (#166) and William G. WALLACE (#167). The primary change to William G. WALLACE is the addition of a third child of William G. and Louvenia (Goins) WALLACE. This information was provided recently by a descendant.

"Joe" and Richard MCQUEEN, who were killed in the Cross Mountain mine explosion. Joe and Richard MCQUEEN were children of Richard M. MCQUEEN and his (apparent) second wife, Lizzie (maiden name unknown). Richard M. MCQUEEN's first wife was Jane VOWELL, 1851-1877. Jane was the oldest daughter of Aaron VOWELL and Elizabeth "Betty" CRAIG. Although Joe and Richard were not blood relations of Aaron and Elizabeth, they were half-siblings of the three children of Richard M. MCQUEEN and Jane VOWELL. The half-siblings were: Hettie, born 1871, who married Columbus TEASLEY 15 October 1887 in Anderson County, TN; Mary Ann, born 1873-1874, who married William RUDOLPH 17 December 1893 in Campbell County, TN; and, John Wesley, born 6 January 1877, who married Julia Ann DAUGHERTY 22 March 1896 in Anderson County, TN. All three of the latter children were grandchildren of Aaron and Elizabeth "Betty" (Craig) VOWELL.

June 23, 1927 - October 28, 2011<br />
Chapel Hill<br />
Pearl Francis Seymour, 84, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away on October 28th, 2011. She was born to Sallie Bailey and Paul Francis in LaFollette, Tennessee, on June 23th, 1927. Preceding her in death were her parents and her brothers, Paul Bailey Francis and William Clark Francis. She received her education beginning in Columbia, Missouri, at Christian Junior College, followed by a BA in music from the University of Michigan in 1949, and an MA in music from Mills College in Oakland, California in 1952. An accomplished pianist and organist, she started her career teaching in the Music Department of Mars Hill College, and was also the organist of the Mars Hill Baptist Church. Following her marriage to the Reverend Robert Edward Seymour, Jr., the couple moved to Chapel Hill in 1959, where she served as the organist for the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church for 30 years. She also taught local piano students in her home.<br />
She was an active member of the community, serving as an early President of the Chapel Hill Service League, and a member of the Chapel Hill Music Teachers' Association. She was recently honored with her husband in the naming of the new Chapel Hill Senior Center as the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center. Pearl enjoyed playing tennis, though her primary athletic passion was as a fan of Carolina basketball. She will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched, and her gift of music will be perpetuated by all for whom she played and taught. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert Edward Seymour, Jr.; a son, Robert Edward Seymour III and wife Kelly of Raleigh; a daughter, Frances Jane Seymour and husband Michael Kopetski of Bogor, Indonesia; a sister, Anne Margaret Knott of New York City; and a brother, Phillip Meyrick Francis of Naples, Florida. Pearl especially delighted in her four grandchildren: Leigh Francis Seymour, Robert Edward Seymour IV, Macy Elizabeth Seymour, and Emme Grace Seymour. The family extends special gratitude to the staff of the Carol Woods Health Center for their loving care and support during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to the Ministry of Music or the Endowment Fund of the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church (1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514). Funeral arrangements are being made by Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5th, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.<br />

John Lycurgus Offutt, II, was named for his grandfather, Col. John Lycurgus Offutt. Col. Offutt was born 1 Aug 1826 in MD and died 12 Aug 1885 in TN. He married Adalide A. Kindler, born 25 Mar 1848 in MD. According to John L., his grandfather was a contractor who came to TN in the 1800s. He built part of the Southern Railroad between Clinton and Jellico. He bought a farm where the Southern Railway leaves the Clinch River going to Jellico.<br />
<br />
John L. Offutt was the best friend of my father, Paul Bailey Francis, Sr., in high school in LaFollette, TN. He and his wife, Cora Hansel (Minton) Offutt, accompanied my parents when they eloped to Sevierville, TN, 25 February 1940, and my parents accompanied them to Sevierville to be married by the same minister on 19 June 1940. They were lifelong friends. Rest in peace.<br />

Earnest WALLACEEd Wallace, a great grandson of Fraterville miner, W. Earnest WALLACE, contacted me recently. He provided me with some information that I did not know. W. Earnest WALLACE had a son, William Earnest WALLACE, born December, 1902. In the 1910 census for Anderson County, TN, William Earnest WALLACE, age 7, was a nephew in the household of Andy J. and Martha A. WALLACE. Andy J. WALLACE was also a coal miner. I think that they are the Andy J. WALLACE and Alice BAILEY who were married 7 August 1899 in Anderson County, TN. William Earnest WALLACE married Maude HOLMES in 1921, and they had 7 children including Gerald WALLACE, who married Louise. Ed WALLACE is the 4th child of Gerald and Louise WALLACE.<br />

There will probably be no significant revision in the near future unless new and/or better information is found for one or more of the miners. This coming May 19th will be the 109th anniversary of the Fraterville mine explosion.Seventy Years in the Coal Mines Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944387198918195764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8131081886601290635.post-63288076382211761162011-05-04T06:01:00.000-07:002011-05-05T12:24:19.725-07:00Pontygyllan FfengigMy 3rd great grandmother, Margaret (Watkins) FRANCIS died 23 August 1848 in Pontygyllan Ffengig in the old Parish of Eglwysilan (now Whitchurch), Glamorgan, Wales. From the image of her death certificate, I transcribed the place name incorrectly. Based on an exchange of messages on the GLAMORGAN Rootsweb list in the past several days, I now know the correct spelling.<br />
<br />
Pontygyllan Ffengig is translated from Welsh to English as Walnut Tree Bridge. It was a bridge/viaduct over the Taff River near Taff's Well.<br />
<br />
Here are two references to the area.<br />

I have corrected some errors. I have added information about marriages, spouse's parents, children; re-marriages of the widows, and the children from the re-marriages. There are still a few miners for whom I have found no information. I welcome corrections and additions to the information that I have published. If anyone has any additional information they would like to share, please write me at the contact address on my <a href="http://www.seventyyearsinthecoalmines.org">home page</a>.Seventy Years in the Coal Mines Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944387198918195764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8131081886601290635.post-28933475511806685612011-04-21T17:01:00.000-07:002011-04-21T17:01:06.274-07:00Black Lung ProgramRecently, I was contacted by Arlene Cole, Outreach Coordinator/Benefits Counselor of the Black Lung Department of Community Health of East Tennessee, Inc.
